Weatherly unveils plans for municipal complex

Weatherly has unveiled plans for its long-awaited $2 million municipal complex.

Borough officials have spent more than three years assembling a package of grants, including waiting out the 2016 state government shutdown. At their meeting this week, council finally gave its approval to plans for a new police station, a municipal building and a magisterial district judge's office, to be located on a 16-acre property at the intersection of Plane Street and West Main, the former Tung-Sol Electric plant."We actually talked about the plans for some time, assuming and hoping we would get the money we needed," Mayor Tom Connors said. "Then we sat, we were hoping for the other million. That delayed the project 3 years, 3 years!"Police and borough office workers have shared space in the former Weatherly train station for years. The new buildings are several times larger than their current home.Councilman Joseph Cyburt said that the police have endured cramped conditions in their current station."If they get two people in there who don't like each other, they're in trouble. They use (the meeting room) a lot of the time. I think nobody's gonna be happier than the police to actually get a place to work," Cyburt said.Borough Manager Harold Pudliner said that the buildings will be bid out at the same time, which he estimated to be this winter. He said the project will take two years.Last month, council authorized him to borrow up to $1 million to cover expenses that will be reimbursed by grants. The proposed police station is 6,240 square feet, including a garage and increased evidence storage. The municipal building will be 4,320 square feet.Magisterial District Court 56-3-04 will also get a new home on the property. The 3,250-square-foot building will replace the current court office in the Weatherly Plaza. The new court building will include increased security measures that have become standard at district court offices around the county. The county diverted a $475,000 federal grant to Weatherly to build the new magisterial district court. The borough got another $595,000 from the Local Share Account program - gaming money - for the project. The biggest piece of funding is a $1 million grant from the highly competitive Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, beating out applications from larger municipalities and counties. That grant was held up due to the state budget crisis in summer 2016, but it was officially awarded in November.Councilwoman Theresa D'Andrea thanked Pudliner for meeting individually with council members this week to show them the plans, and his work to acquire the grants."Harold did take his time and each one of us came down separately, and I certainly appreciate that," she said. "And all your endeavors the last few years to succeed and get the $2 million for the community."
