Funeral director accused of sharing photos, selling pot

A funeral director from Monroe County has been accused of selling marijuana and sharing graphic photos of a deceased person.

Angeliegha Marie Stewart, 27, of East Stroudsburg, was employed as a funeral director at Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home at the time of the alleged crimes.

She faces 25 separate counts of abuse of a corpse, as well as a felony charge for allegedly selling marijuana.

According to a detective with the Monroe County District Attorney's Office, two confidential informants said Stewart showed them photos of a corpse in order to "gross them out." They related that the corpse had its organs harvested for donation.

The informants also told the detectives that Stewart sold marijuana to her friends for extra money.

According to a criminal complaint, Detectives obtained a search warrant for a cell phone that the informants said belonged to Stewart. When they searched the phone, they found photos matching those described by the informants. The photos showed a white male corpse which had undergone the organ harvesting process.

They also allegedly found photos of several other corpses, including one that appeared to be rotting and covered in maggots.

Detectives also said they found pictures of marijuana packaged for sale and distribution.

The phone's text conversations also included messages that police said were consistent with marijuana sales.

The detectives subsequently obtained a search warrant for Stewart's apartment on Washington Street, where they found marijuana, ammunition and spent casings, as well as a digital scale.

In an interview with police, she admitted to selling marijuana and taking the photos found in her phone. She said the purpose of the photos was to show a coworker as a joke.

She was arraigned Friday and released under her own recognizance.

According to the state Board of Funeral Directors, Stewart was licensed as a funeral director last June. She previously held licenses as a funeral intern and funeral trainee.
