Holiday help

The holidays are just around the corner and the Tamaqua Salvation Army stands ready to help those in need.Registrations for Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday assistance will be taken over a three-day period, Oct. 10-12. Hours will be from noon to 6 p.m. each day for residents of the Tamaqua Area and Panther Valley School Districts. There will not be any registrations taken before or after that three-day period.Proper identification and proof of need are required. Registrants MUST provide proof of residence, such as a utility bill; Social Security cards for every household member; proof of all household income, including employment/ wages, public assistance, food stamps, Social Security/SSI, and any other type of income; official birth certificates for anyone under the age of 12; expenses, such as rent/mortgage, utilities, food, medical, etc.; and a working phone number.There will not be a makeup date, so please make sure you attend one of the three registration dates.Thanksgiving distribution will be held Nov. 20, while Christmas distribution will be on Dec. 20.Heart galaThe Tamaqua Has Heart Gala and Auction will be held on Sept. 28 at the former Scheid's Building in Downtown Tamaqua.A preview and registration session will be held at 6 p.m. with the auction slated to begin at 7 p.m.For further information, call 570-668-1192.Garden clubThe Lewistown Valley Garden Club will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 26. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at this Sunday's 9:15 a.m. worship service in St. John's Lutheran Church. Guest speaker will be Luke Csellak Swanson, a volunteer missionary from Buenos Aires, Argentina.Also on Sunday, the bell choir will rehearse at 8 a.m., Sunday school and Confirmation classes will meet at 10:30 a.m.Next Thursday, the Angel choir rehearses at 6 p.m., shepherd choir meets at 6:30 p.m. and chancel choir practice is at 7:30 p.m.Calvary EvangelicalThe Rev. Phillip Sabas will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Special music will be offered by Claire Lewis, guest soloist. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, following the service, there will be a covered dish luncheon, walk and ice cream social.
