Recycling program may end in Nesquehoning

Recycling may be ending in Nesquehoning.

Nesquehoning Borough Council has announced that the recycling bins along Locust Street, owned by Solomon Containers, will be removed as of Sept. 29."The borough did not elect to terminate the service with Solomon at this time," council President David Hawk said. "The bins are being removed because Solomon canceled our month to month contract. They are not servicing this area any longer due to the distance."Hawk said that the borough "obtained quotes from other recycling service providers, but the lowest price we have is approximately three times what we were paying with Solomon, and unfortunately that is not financially feasible for the borough at this time."We are continuing to look for another service provider, and have discussed other options, but it is doubtful we will have an alternative before the end of the month."Council reminds residents that once the bins are removed, they should not place anything in that area for recycling because it will not be picked up.Recyclable items should be placed in residents' regular trash until further notice. In recent months, the borough has dealt with numerous problems at the bins, including the collection of items not taking place, businesses using the bins when they shouldn't be and residents dumping items around the bins when the bins were full.
