Franklin teachers donate to Houston students

Tiffany Strausberger was perusing an educational blog shortly before the start of the school year when one post in particular caught her eye.

A woman from Florida wrote a post, asking if any classrooms in Houston needed school supplies in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.Strausberger and fellow Franklin Elementary teacher Justin Fritz jumped on the opportunity, adopting a third and fourth grade classroom respectively."We had to jump on it quickly and the staff came together and collected a little over $500," Strausberger said."On Thursday night, we purchased 85 percent of the supply list for the classrooms and sent it out via Amazon. Our staff really stepped up to the plate. All we had to do was send an email and they were on board."Fritz said the teachers plan to use the efforts as a learning tool for Lehighton students."Sometimes we take certain things for granted and we don't recognize that there are areas where kids are going to school without backpacks or the basic supplies," he said. "This is a great chance to teach character traits and the importance of giving back."The relationship between students in Lehighton and Houston may not end with the shipment of supplies. Both teachers are planning to keep in contact with the Houston classrooms."We've talked about doing a pen pal program to get acquainted and some other projects with back-and-forth communication," Fritz said. With the success of the fund drive for supplies in such a short amount of time, further fundraisers could be in the works."We all felt like we could do more based on what they need," Strausberger said. "Whether it be a pajama day or a penny race, there are plenty of ways to raise money, have a good time and help others out."
