Lady Olympians seek help in funding Florida tournament

The Jim Thorpe Lady Olympians Booster Club plans to give participants in its basketball program a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in the form of a trip to Orlando, Florida, this December.

Coach Rob Kovac's team will participate in a national tournament there at ESPN's Wide World of Sports. The trip has been in the planning stages for two years, but according to the boosters, "It does not come without a cost."The boosters have been holding various fundraisers to pay for the trip, with its biggest event being on tap for this Sunday, when the second annual Lady Olympians Basketball Boosters Golf Tournament will be held at the Mahoning Valley Country Club Golf Course."Two years ago, we set our sights on this exciting and new endeavor," assistant coach Gene Binder says. "In order for this dream to become a reality, the expenses associated with this trip will need to be paid by the basketball boosters. We have been raising money for two years now and our golf tournament is the major fundraiser in our quest to raise enough money to send the girls on this trip."Binder said the "scramble" tournament still has several openings and interested golfers can contact him to participate. Sponsors for holes, the picnic after the tourney, tees, greens and a luncheon are also being sought."We would appreciate your kind consideration in becoming a sponsor, which will help make the golf tournament a financial success. It is our hope that, with your assistance, the tournament will push us over the top in our fundraising efforts," Binder said, addressing the general public. Those interested in helping the team raise the funds necessary by participating in this weekend's event can contact Binder at 570-640-5227. Donations can also be sent to: Lady Olympians Basketball, c/o Coach Gene Binder, 7 Seventh Ave., Nesquehoning, PA 18240.
