Carbon man gets two years for DUI

A Carbon County man was sentenced to a long state prison term on Tuesday on a drunken driving charge.

Edward Charles Kleintop, 45, of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve two to five years in a state correction institution by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II.Kleintop was arrested on Sept. 30, 2016, by state police at Lehighton along Delaware Avenue in Palmerton.A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.He was originally charged with 13 counts including possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a small amount of marijuana and six motor vehicle code violations.At the time he entered the plea, Nanovic told him he faced a long state prison term because of his prior criminal record.He was also sentenced to serve 90 days in prison on a driving under suspension count, but the term runs concurrent with the DUI charge.Kleintop was fined $2,500, his license was suspended for 18 months.He was ordered to get a mental health evaluation, pay court costs of about $1,000, follow the recommendations of his drug and alcohol evaluation and pay a fine of $1,000 on the suspension charge.He was given credit for six days spent in jail on the charge.He must report to the county prison on Sept. 25 at 5 p.m. to begin his prison term. He will then be transferred to a state facility.
