Weist, Grigas lead Spartans by Colts

The beat goes on and on at North Schuylkill.

The Spartans' football team doesn't lack for talent and depth and proved that again on Friday with a 35-0 rout of Marian to improve to 3-0 on the season. The only thing that slowed North Schuylkill was a power outage that forced the Marian officials to turn off the lights and reboot near the end of the first quarter. However by that time, the Spartans had already roared out to an impressive 19-0 lead."They're darn good ... that speed and the physicality. They have the total package," said first-year Marian coach Pat Morgans. "They're an impressive team. They did what was needed."The only thing that I can say is that I didn't do a very good job getting us ready to play … that's on me."As good as the Spartans were as a team, one player in red, white and blue that stood out was quarterback Doug Weist, who had his coming out party against Marian one-year ago in a late-game relief effort. Weist connected on his first six throws in the first quarter for 135 yards, firing bullets to top-flight receiver Scotty Grigas who had four of those receptions for 94 yards."I wasn't surprised with the way they came out," said Morgans about the Spartans aerial attack. "(Weist) is very good and Grigas makes them even better."The first three possession for the Spartans hit pay dirt.Weist wasted little time in leading his team down the field on a 40-yard march to start the game that tailback Mitch Wagner (17 carries, 148 yards) cashed in on a one-yard touchdown run. After Marian was forced to punt, North Schuylkill drove 80 yards on its second possession for a 12-0 lead. Weist again was cranking up his accurate throws. First connecting with Aaron Perneta for a nine-yard gain, then a 17-yard pass to Grigas and then another heave to Grigas for a 56-yard scoring strike. On its third possession, North Schuylkill marched 48 yards for a touchdown. Weist hit Grigas (eight catches, 152 yards) with a 12-yard completion. Wagner then bolted 25 yards to the five before he eventually capped the drive with a four-yard run.Halfway through the second quarter, North Schuylkill scored another touchdown on a 13-yard pass from Weist to Grigas. The fleet-footed Grigas took the second-half kickoff to the house on a 74-yard run, that made it 32-0. Luke Halko put the finishing touches on the evening scoring with a 23-yard field goal at 3:03 of the third quarter to kick in the running clock.I FEEL THE NEED … Speed does kill and North Schuylkill is not only speedy, but quick to the ball. The defense swarmed all night long, holding Marian to minus 23 rushing yards and 35 passing yards.WEIST, WEIST AND WEIST… Last season Weist came off the bench and nearly engineered a comeback win for the Spartans against the Colts. Since that appearance in Week 3 of 2016, he has been the North Schuylkill quarterback.WHAT'S NEXT?… Marian is going to have to pick up he pieces in a hurry. It takes on a resurgent Lehighton team, which is now 3-0. The Colts are now 1-2.
