Man gets state term for assault by vehicle

A Lehigh County man was sentenced to a long state prison term on Tuesday on a charge of aggravated assault by vehicle stemming from an accident in which his passenger sustained serious injuries.

Allen D. Miller Jr., 25, of Slatington, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve 42 months to seven years in a state correctional institution on the charge. He also faces a big restitution bill.Miller previously pleaded to the charge.Miller was originally charged with 15 counts. Among the charges dropped by the district attorney in a plea bargain was aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, a felony 2, and accidents involving death or injury, a felony 3.Miller also pleaded to DUI and three summary motor vehicle code offenses of driving at an unsafe speed, careless driving and reckless driving.Miller was charged by state police at Lehighton for an incident on Oct. 7, 2016, in which troopers attempted to stop his vehicle.He led them on a chase and eventually crashed his vehicle. A passenger in the vehicle, Brian Karlick, 26, of Nesquehoning, sustained serious injuries to his right arm in the crash.On the DUI charge Nanovic sentenced him to serve three to six months in a state prison, consecutive to the first count. He was also ordered to pay a fine of $1,000, one-year license suspension and supply a DNA sample.He must pay restitution of $21,330.56 to Karlick and another $772.22 to the department of public welfare for illegally receiving funds. On the summary counts he was fined a total of $250 and must get a drug and alcohol evaluation, and when paroled seek outpatient counseling.Miller, who has been in prison since the incident, was given credit for 203 days.
