Junior collects shoes for Harvey victims

Pleasant Valley junior Logan Mackes is helping victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Shortly after Hurricane Harvey struck Texas, Mackes, a junior at Pleasant Valley High School, saw a report on the news that Fleet Feet, a North Carolina-based sports and footwear company, was organizing an effort to collect shoes and socks for the people in Texas affected by the devastation left in the wake of Harvey.Mackes, who is class treasurer, texted his class adviser and asked if it would be OK and was told to "go for it. The project has taken off from there.Mackes lives in Kresgeville and has set up donation drop-off points at the high school, West End Physical Therapy and the Monroe County Courthouse. Donations will also be accepted outside the main gate at the Sept. 15 varsity football home game. Mackes would like to see all of the Pleasant Valley schools participate as well.Fleet Feet stores are located in central and western Pennsylvania. Mackes will continue to collect the shoes and socks through Sept. 22, after which he will meet with representatives of the company in Mechanicsburg to deliver the collected items."I did this because I was seeing what was happening in Texas and I was thinking that I would want to know that someone would want to help us if something like that were to happen here," Mackes said.According to the Fleet Feet website, shoes should be tied together and marked with the gender and size on the back of the heel.
