Carbon man charged with assault after crash

A Lehighton man was arrested after a crash in Tamaqua on Sept. 1.

Police were called to Route 309 in the area of Mermon Motors at 10:30 a.m. and found a white Subaru facing west in the southbound lane.The driver said she was driving southbound when her front seat passenger grabbed the steering wheel, causing her to lose control.The Subaru struck a guide rail and bounced back into the traffic lane.The passenger, Anthony Steckler, 45, appeared to be intoxicated and kept stumbling into the traffic lane as medical personnel attended to him and the driver.Officers warned him, several times, about walking into traffic.When Hope’s Towing arrived to remove the Subaru, Steckler began shouting obscenities and interfering with the tow truck driver.He was placed in the back of a squad car and transported to the office of District Magisterial Judge Stephen Bayer for arraignment on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, public drunkenness and disorderly conduct.The judge set bail at a nominal amount of $1 after Steckler admitted he has no permanent address.He was unable to post bond and was taken to the Schuylkill County Prison in Pottsville.
