Vikings rally to stun Bears

Even the most novice of fans are aware there are two halves to a football game.

If a team wants to win the game, they usually need to play both halves. In Friday's Eastern Pennsylvania Conference North Division match-up between Pleasant Valley and Allentown Central Catholic, the two halves couldn't have been more different. The first saw the Bears storm out to a 21-0 lead, dominate up front, and limit their foes on defense. The second saw the opposite, as Central utilized strong running, cut down on their turnovers and rattled off 28 unanswered points. The result was a come-from-behind 28-21 win behind the stellar running of junior Logan Bachman."I give credit to Pleasant Valley because they came out tonight and knocked us right in the mouth in the first half," Central head coach Bob Pietrobon said. "At halftime, I got after them, but before I even got to the locker room, the kids took it upon themselves to get after each other and we came out hard."In fact, Pleasant Valley, which piled up 11 of their 14 total first downs before the break, had no answer defensively for the stud, Bachman. The Kutztown High transfer ran four times for 18 yards in the first half, before coming out of the intermission gates and carrying the ball 23 times for 229 yards in the second."When we went into the locker room, all of our heads were down," Bachman said. "I had to step up, show leadership and pick the team up, so I came out harder and stronger."The bruiser pounded his way up the middle repeatedly, breaking tackles and scoring on runs of 52 and 19 yards to cut the Bear lead to 21-14 in just over four minutes of third quarter play. When teammate Frank Rauscher found his way in from the one roughly five minutes later, momentum had swung to the Vikings, as their raid of Brodheadsville was yielding plenty of spoils.Bachman said, "It feels amazing to get the win because now our team is able to have some confidence and come out each week harder."Meanwhile, Pleasant Valley head coach Mark Versuk sees his Bears fall to 0-2 in disappointing fashion, after holding the three-score lead for half the contest.Salting the wound were two more injuries to crucial starters as Brent Beck went down with a potential high ankle sprain, while lineman Zach Altemose looks to have damaged his ACL."When we went into halftime tonight, we knew the game was not won by any means," he said. "It was a very focused halftime speech, trying to correct some things, talking about ball security and executing first downs. But we just couldn't execute in the second half. We didn't tackle well, despite having some guys in the right places."The momentum really spiraled and we have a lot of work to do with some of the young kids getting in to replace some injured starters."PLENTY OF PLUNDER ... Despite losing regular starting quarterback Conner Nejad in week one, Central coach Pietrobon was pleased with the Rauscher brothers (Frank, Sr. and Matt, Fr.), stepping in to lead the Vikings (1-1) in their offensive attack.RAGNAR LOTHBROK ... The effort of Central Catholic's Logan Bachman resembled the performance of the fictional character from TV's Vikings, as he created opportunities, led his team, powered through opponents and was a major factor in his squad's resulting spoils of victory.SOILED LAUNDRY ... The total amount of flags thrown on the night was 17, as nine penalties against Central yielded 99 yards, while the Bears had eight infractions called back for an overall 60 yards.
