An ordinance to regulate parking on Ninth and Bridge streets in order to accommodate the traffic signal and roadway improvements for the new elementary center in Lehighton has been given the green light.
Borough council on a 6-0 vote Monday agreed to adopt an ordinance amending the parking regulation on Ninth and Bridge streets. Councilman Jared McEvoy was absent. Before council's vote, police Chief Brian Biechy addressed the requests and need for a stop sign at Grant Alley and Union Street where it comes out by the high school.Biechy said he was concerned with the amount of traffic coming in and out."My biggest concern is getting ready for next Tuesday," Biechy said, alluding to the date the district will hold its first day of classes for the 2017-18 school year.Borough Manager Nicole Beckett said after the meeting the question was whether or not the borough needs an ordinance to erect the stop sign. However, the Vehicle Code states that a driver must stop when emerging from an alley onto a street, therefore an ordinance would not be required, Beckett said.School district officials have approved $33 million for the construction of a K-5 elementary center on the district's main campus. The district will be responsible for the construction of the traffic light and cost of construction, while the borough will be responsible for the maintenance of the light and take ownership once constructed. The four corners of the intersection will be handicapped accessible, officials said. There is only one exit from the district due to construction of the new elementary center.
