Charges pending in 248 oil spill

Charges are pending against the owner of a trailer that caused a section of Route 248 to be closed as the result of a spill from a crash Wednesday morning in Lehigh Township.

Township police Sgt. John Henry said the trailer was being towed by a black GMC Sierra pickup truck operated by Amber Rex, 29, of Lehighton. The Lehigh Township Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched at 8:41 a.m. to a spill on the highway at the traffic light at routes 248 and 873 after the trailer crashed, rolled over and leaked what appeared to be an unidentified oily substance, possibly TAC oil or driveway sealer, all over the westbound lanes of routes 248 and 873, extending one-quarter to one-half a mile. The trailer was abandoned just before the Carbon County line.No injuries resulted from the incident.Pennsylvania Department of Transportation sand trucks arrived on scene to keep the spill from spreading, collect the substance, and try to remove it.Construction was taking place on top of the 873 bridge, which was down to one lane, and prompted traffic to be rerouted to Route 145.As of Thursday afternoon, Henry said 20 people had called and complained about their vehicles being covered in tar.Henry said the matter is still under investigation.
