Southern Lehigh blanks Bulldogs
Fast is good.
Faster is better.Northern Lehigh head coach Joe Tout was happy with his team speed coming into the season, saying it had improved from a year ago.Unfortunately for the longtime mentor, the Bulldogs' quickness still doesn't match up with Southern Lehigh. The Spartans used that speed to their advantage Friday night to cruise to a 42-0 Colonial League victory."They're good," Tout said of the Spartans. "They were in the district final last year. I thought we did some positive stuff early, but we have to get better."They're just faster. That's what ended up happening. I thought we were pretty physical, but then they were able to just send guys and we struggled to pick them up. The difference was speed. They were faster than us tonight."Luke Strauss and Mike Sisslberger showed off some of that speed running the ball, but the real difference came from the Solehi receivers. Elijah Price pulled away from Northern Lehigh's secondary for a pair of touchdown catches, while Quinn Schmidt was a tough match-up at tight end and was also on the receiving end of a couple of scores."Obviously we're fortunate to have a lot of quick kids and fast kids," said Spartan head coach John Toman, whose team totaled 505 yards of offense. "We thought we could throw the ball ... and we have a veteran quarterback. He had a great first half throwing the ball. I think we showed tonight we have a good array of weapons."That quarterback Toman was talking about was Logan Edmond. After the Bulldogs (0-1) forced a three-and-out on Southern Lehigh's first possession, Edmond caught fire. The junior completed 9-of-12 passes for 208 yards and three scores in the first half as the visitors opened a 21-0 advantage.Sisselberger added a 54-yard scoring burst in the third quarter before Edmond tossed his fourth touchdown later in the frame."We matched their physicality but then their passing game came into play," said Tout. "Deep passes hurt us. And it wasn't just on the secondary. The line didn't get pressure. We started to send stunts and they didn't get there."Getting to the end zone proved a difficult task for the Bulldogs, who hadn't been shut out in 23 straight games. Nolehi reached Spartan territory five times, including a turnover that put them inside the 10, but couldn't break through on the scoreboard."Our defense played well all night," said Toman. "We were trying to keep them fresh, rotating them in and out. The defense pitched a shutout and you can't ask for anything more than that."Despite the lopsided score, Tout managed to see some positives."We didn't have a lot of penalties or any turnovers, and that's a good thing," he said. "We told the kids to keep their heads up. We'll come back and fight. We played one of the biggest school in our league tonight. We'll come back next week and play a school (Catasauqua) that's more comparable to us."GOOD START ... Northern Lehigh received the opening kickoff and ran for 30 yards on its first four plays. The Bulldogs finished the opening quarter with 55 yards of offense, but had just 35 the rest of the game.BOOMING PUNT ... Nolehi's Mason Seiler punted seven times. His first one sailed over the returners and went for a 55-yarder.BIG PLAY TEAM ... Southern Lehigh finished with 10 plays over 20 yards, including five of their touchdowns.
