Jim Thorpe stuns Haven
A coming-out party in sports is when a team or player makes an unexpected impact on the game.
On Friday night, against perennial power Schuylkill Haven, Jim Thorpe not only had a coming-out party, it had an extravaganza. The Olympians dominated the Hurricanes in the trenches for four quarters, wearing down the always talented front of Schuylkill Haven for a 19-7 opening week non-league victory. The difference was simple. The Olympians (1-0) play on the offensive and defensive line throughout the night propelled them to the win. They held Schuylkill Haven (0-1) to just 82 yards rushing, and on the offensive side of the ball cleared the way for 201 yards on the ground."We came into this game with a lot of confidence in our kids up front on both the offensive and defensive line. This group made it a point to get in the weight room and get stronger and that result was evident tonight," said Thorpe head coach Mark Rosenberger. "Our kids simply got the job done, our running backs in St. Hill and Selby had huge games for us, but there's no doubt this game was won up front tonight."Justin St. Hill and C.J. Selby served as a consistent and strong one-two punch, with St. Hill getting the hard-fought three and four-yard runs, while Selby mixed in the big play.St. Hill scored from nine yards out in the first quarter to get Thorpe out to a 6-0 lead and then gave the Olympians the lead again on the first play of the second-half with a 40-yard scamper down the right sideline to make it 12-7. Selby then extended the Thorpe lead to 19-7 on a 63-yard rush up the middle with 2:18 remaining in the third."We saw in the first week of camp how much Selby has come along and how hard he runs and I think everyone knows how talented Justin is, so with those two together, we can really keep people off balance," said Rosenberger. "We're going to continue to keep spreading the ball around offensively, we have some talented kids that can do some good things with the ball in space."For Haven, they just couldn't get things going on the offensive side of the ball in the run game, which is usually the Hurricanes bread and butter. The 'Canes had to go to the air to see any type of success against the Olympians with their lone score coming on a nice play-action pass play that resulted in an 81-yard pitch and catch between Josh Kalyan and Brandon Koch that gave them the lead with 6:36 to go in the second quarter.Kalyan had a nice day throwing the football with 175 yards and a touchdown through the air, but the lack of a consistent running game hurt the Hurricanes throughout the night."They played better than us, it's as simple as that," said Schuylkill Haven head coach Mike Farr. "I'm kind-of glad they humbled us a little bit tonight, our kids now know we have a lot to work on. Everybody is telling us how good we are and we got smacked in the face tonight, and we're going to get back to work this week and get better. It's a long season. We'll bounce back."BIG STOP ... Before the end of the second-half, the Jim Thorpe defense clamped down inside its own five, holding Schuylkill Haven to a 23-yard field goal attempt. The kick sailed wide right, so instead of trailing by a score of 10-6 at the half it only trailed by one. It was a big momentum boost for Jim Thorpe as they started with the ball in the second half.CONVERTING TURNOVERS ... With Haven trailing 12-7 with a little over six minutes left in the third, a forced throw by Kalyan was intercepted by the Olympians' Roberto Santiago. Thorpe took advantage on its next offensive possession with the big 63-yard touchdown run by Selby. It gave Thorpe a two-score lead with 2:18 remaining in the third quarter.
