Lansford man gets prison for assault

A Lansford man was sentenced to a state prison term on Friday on a aggravated assault charge.

Shane Roger Rex, 28, was sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika to served 60 to 120 months in a state correctional institution.He was charged by Mahoning Township police for an incident on March 29 at a Pine Hollow Drive residence where he entered the home and proceeded to assault two victims, one by kicking him in the head and body.Rex told Matika, "I'm sorry for wasting everybody's time. I hope to get the help I need up state."Defense attorney Matthew G. Schnell, court-appointed, told the court his client suffers from both a heroin addiction and mental health issues including depression.Rex told Matika he wrote a letter of apology to the victim and said he realizes what harm he did.One of the victims was present and told Matika that Rex had threatened her with death three times during the incident and abused her both mentally and physically.Matika told Rex that although he has expressed remorse for what happened that night, he added, "Your conduct that night can't be excused."He said he believed the drug addiction and his mental health problems contributed to what occurred.In addition to the prison term Rex was ordered to get both drug and alcohol and mental evaluations, render 100 hours of community service when paroled, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, supply a DNA sample, have no contact with the victims, pay restitution of $819.03 and pay court costs of about $1,000.He was given credit for 297 days spent in prison to date on the charges.
