Pedestrian bridge trusses to be delivered

The cross-section of the long-awaited pedestrian bridge, which will finish another portion of the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor trail through Jim Thorpe, is coming to town next week.

On Thursday, Commissioners' Chairman Wayne Nothstein announced that the bridge's trusses will be delivered in six 40-foot sections between Wednesday and Friday.Two of the sections will arrive Wednesday between 3 and 4 p.m. Sections three and four will arrive at 10 a.m. and noon on Thursday; and loads five and six will arrive Aug. 25 between 10 and 11 a.m.The six sections will be transported to the staging area at the northern end of the county parking lot near the new Route 903 bridge, where they will be assembled.The span will then be transported to the piers for the bridge and lifted into place.Nothstein anticipates this part of the project to happen about a month after the delivery happens.Latona Trucking Inc. of Pittston is completing the construction of the 250-foot steel truss bridge that will span the Lehigh River near Turkey Hill in Jim Thorpe.Latona was approved by the commissioners as the company to complete the project in December, after reviewing their bid of $2,729,483.20. The whole project is expected to cost over $3.2 million.Construction is expected to be completed this fall.
