A Carbon County program is helping juveniles in need of community service, while also cleaning up littered roadways.

Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard, on Thursday, spoke about the Community Service Work Program, which provided juveniles who are on probation with an opportunity to complete their community service hours while tackling the county's litter problem."We received several calls about the excessive garbage along our roads," Gerhard said, pointing out that Joe Greco and Crystal Smith of the juvenile probation office have led the charge in the program.He said that on June 22, the program members cleaned 10 miles of road along Lentz Trail and collected 30 bags; on July 21, they cleaned up 5.4 miles of Old Stage Road in Albrightsville and collected 22 bags of litter; and on Aug 3, another 10 miles along Stoney Mountain Road in Albrightsville, collecting an additional 25 bags of litter."Not only are we helping our offenders," Gerhard said. "They are giving back to the county."He also thanked the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for providing the trash bags, gloves and vests for the program.Gerhard announced that there are still four Saturdays in September and October that will be used for additional road cleanup and asked the public to contact the county if there is a roadway that they feel has excessive trash and needs to be cleaned up.
