Building develops problems after Elks demolition

A Coaldale resident representing his mother, who lives in Lansford, is looking for help from Carbon County.

On Thursday, BJ Berk approached the commissioners to discuss a building next to the now demolished Elks building on East Ridge Street."Our building (4 E. Ridge St.) was exposed in March," he said. "It was blue tarped. Now we have water leaks and walls coming in. We also have water coming in our foundation that we never had before."Berk said he and his mother went to Lansford to address the problem that was created through the demolition project, but the borough never came back to them about any repairs or solutions.Commissioners' Chairman Wayne Nothstein said the county will look into it but he believes it is a borough and engineer issue. The former Elks building was torn down earlier this year by Northeast Industrial Services of Shamokin at a cost of $145,748, with Carbon County chipping in $127,791 in Community Development Block Grant funds and Lansford filling in the rest of the remaining $18,000 balance. The contract was later decreased by $6,927.20 after the engineer allowed the use of some of the fill from the demolition as backfill and also leave the foundation to maintain the safety and integrity of the adjacent buildings.
