Programs set for Schuylkill parks

Several programs have been scheduled by personnel of the Tuscarora or Locust Lake state parks in Barnesville, Schuylkill County.

OnAug. 23, naturalist Robin Tracey of Tuscarora will lead a hike at Swatara State Park. The trail is 8 miles long and moderate. The trail runs parallel to Swatara Creek. Participants will be hiking down to the old steel bridge and crossing to make a loop around the back part of the park. Hikers will also go down to Bordner cabin. Meet in the parking lot on Sand Siding Road just off Route 443 in Suedberg at 10 a.m. Bring a lunch and water. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed and get along with other pets and people. Contact Tracey at 570-467-2506 for more information.Three events are scheduled for Aug. 26.Retired deputy wildlife conservation officer from the state game commission, Bill O'Donnell, will be presenting a program on trapping and furbearing starting at 6 p.m. in the Locust Lake amphitheater. He will talk about predator trapping and some of the benefits and necessity of wildlife trapping. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held in the program shelter located next to the camp store.Tracey will lead a hike at the Landingville Marsh. The trail is 4 miles long and easy. Participants will hike around the marsh looking for wildflowers and critters and make a stop at the Auburn Dam. Meet at the Advanced Auto Parts store in the Cressona Mall parking lot to carpool to the site at 10 a.m. Dogs are welcome, but must be leashed and get along with other pets and people. Shine only.Join the park naturalist for a salamander program at Locust Lake Park starting at 3:30 p.m. She will discuss salamander anatomy, habitat and role in the ecosystem. A field identification capture and release walk will follow. Meet at the amphitheater and bring along a plastic container for animal collection. For more information call Tracey. Shine only.OnAug. 30, a hike to Peddler's Grave and the Greeny in Shenandoah Heights will be held. The grave is the site of the first recorded murder in Schuylkill County. Meet at the Miner's Memorial in Shenandoah at 10:30 a.m. and carpool to the site. The hike is moderate and 5 miles long. Bring a lunch. Pets are welcome but must be leashed and get along with other pets and people. Shine only.
