Man in court for police threats

A man with a history of threats against police and lawyers in Carbon County was in court Wednesday.

But John Large’s preliminary hearing on harassment charges did not go forward because he is still trying to get legal representation.Large, 52, faces charges for threatening the Lehighton State Police barracks and his ex-wife.The former Lansford resident has previously been accused of making bomb threats to judges and attorneys, puncturing car radiators, placing a fake bomb outside a residence and other harassing behavior.“He’s never acted on any one of these, however we’re very afraid he may act on them, which is why we’re here for this issue,” said trooper Shaun Flynn of state police at Fern Ridge, who investigated the threats at the barracks.Large has two cases pending in Carbon County. Both stem from incidents that took place last summer. On June 13, state police said Large called the Lehighton barracks and threatened to attack the troopers stationed there. According to court documents, a trooper said Large told him that his attack would dwarf the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, which had occurred the day before. The previous day, Large is charged with making threats to his ex-wife by phone and through written notes. Police said the notes were placed on a dead crow and a dead snake and left outside her home. She had sought an emergency protection from abuse order just over a week before.State police traced Large’s cellphone to Vermont and he was arrested on June 15 of last year. Over the last year he remained in jail there fighting his extradition. He was returned to Pennsylvania last month.Large has previously been convicted of harassment and related charges for phone calls to retired judges and other government officials. In most cases, he pleaded guilty to charges that did not carry jail time, Flynn said.“However this time, when he threatened all the troopers in a government facility, that kind of changed everything,” Flynn said.In that case, Large is facing a felony charge of terrorism, which would result in jail time.In district court on Wednesday, Large asked for a continuance so he can attempt to get a public defender.Large’s application for a public defender was previously denied. Large told District Judge William Kissner he wished to appeal that decision to Common Pleas Court. Kissner granted a continuance for Wednesday’s hearings.Officials could not say why Large’s application was denied. The Carbon County Public Defender’s said it cannot release information about an individual’s application because it contains personal financial information. In order to qualify for a public defender, a defendant must complete an application and prove that he is unable to afford an attorney.Large is currently jailed at Carbon County Correctional Facility. His combined bail between the two cases is $225,000.
