Motorcyclist crashes after fleeing from police

A biker was seriously injured Sunday evening in a crash after a chase that started at Beltzville Lake and ended in Lehigh County.

Palmerton Borough Police Chief Randy Smith said the incident occurred at 7:04 p.m. when a Beltzville park ranger attempted to stop Benjamin Aponte, 29, of Allentown, for numerous traffic violations. But, Aponte fled and was pursued by Franklin Township police, before eluding them on Route 248 as he fled east.At that point, Smith said Palmerton police picked Aponte up and attempted to stop him, but the motorcycle failed to stop.He said Aponte continued east on Route 248 when he got behind slower traffic and attempted to run right onto Route 873, but as he turned, he lost control and struck a van that was stopped in a line of traffic on the bridge.Smith said Aponte was thrown from his motorcycle and treated by Palmerton officers until ambulance personnel arrived on scene. He said Aponte was flown by Penn Star helicopter to St. Luke's hospital trauma center in Bethlehem.Smith said a female in the van suffered minor lacerations by glass due to the impact of the motorcycle into the van. The driver of the van was not injured, he said. Also assisting at the scene were Lehigh Township Police, Smith said.Charges are pending the results of a toxicology report, said Smith, who added numerous charges will be filed against Aponte.
