4-H'ers show sheep at Carbon County Fair

There were almost more Baas than words spoken during the Carbon County 4-H Livestock Club's Lamb Roundup on Tuesday night at the Carbon County Fair in Palmerton.

Contestants brought sheep they raised to compete against one another in fitting and showmanship categories.Judging the competition was Robert Riccioni of Hunterdon County. Riccioni is a former member of 4-H and has worked on his family's farm, helping raise sheep and cattle, for years."The contestants presented very nicely today," Riccioni said. "Between fleece and meat sheep, it can sometimes be like comparing apples and oranges. Judging live animals is also very different from judging them on the rail, but everyone did a wonderful job."A majority of the competition focused on fitting and showmanship.Fitting involves the shearing and washing of the sheep, among other things.Riccioni looked for the length of the sheep's fleece, its cleanliness, as well as the sheep's ears and color.Riccioni compared the color aspect of fitting to clothing."Anyone who wears white clothing knows it's not always easy to keep it white, but everyone here did a fine job with their sheep."During his judging, Riccioni described some advice on when and how to shear and wash sheep properly. The showmanship portion of the competition involved how the handlers worked around Riccioni while he judged the livestock, as well as how they kept the sometimes ornery animals in line and how well they kept the animals at the ready.Three contestants, Mercy Melo, Alex Hawk and Molly Mertz, entered sheep.Between five weight classes, Hawk won the Grand Champion award at the end of the competition.Following the sheep presentation competition, Riccioni also judged a fleece and wool competition, where Mercy Melo won best in show.Tuesday night also saw performances from Elvis Presley impersonator Ryan Pelton.
