Walker Township's board of supervisors on Thursday awarded a contract for roadwork to Schuylkill Paving in the amount of $110,438.

The project will involve work to Reynolds Road, as well as parts of Catawissa and Wildcat roads, and alternative parts of River Road.Township engineer Dave Horst said the project came in at less than anticipated."Our numbers came in really good," Horst said. "Those were really good numbers."The township plans to pay from the project with the $113,000 it has available in liquid fuels.Burning issueAlso on Thursday, board Chairman William McMullen said the township does not plan to implement a burn ban.On several occasions, resident James Wentworth, who lives on River Road, has expressed to the board that an odor results from the burning of garbage.However, McMullen said the township hasn't had any other complaints from anyone else on the matter.Wentworth told the board last month that he has to keep his windows closed due to the odor of the items being burned.Township secretary Ann Ostergaard said the township has a burning ordinance in place as part of its nuisance ordinance.However, Ostergaard said the ordinance does not prohibit burning, but rather, only the burning of specific hazardous materials similar to the items prohibited by the Department of Environmental Protection.
