Volunteer hopes to return family heirlooms

Eldred Township thrift store volunteer Donna Deihl has found some family heirlooms and she is hoping to get them back to the rightful owner.

The thrift store at the Community Center take in clothing and household goods and either sells them at a low price or donate them to those in need. When Deihl was sorting through boxes and bags of donations recently, she came across some treasures and she posted pictures and information about the item in the hopes of finding the owner or the owner's family. One was a Pennsylvania Dutch wedding plate that was created in celebration of the 50th wedding anniversary of Mabel Alice (Hawk) and William Harvey Newhard of Cherryville.Deihl has done some checking but was unable to find any history on the couple who wed on Jan. 20, 1906.Deihl also dug up a Funk and Wagnalls College Standard Dictionary engraved C.J. Balliet M.D. in gold print. After some checking, Deihl found reference to a Dr. C.J. Balliet of Lehighton who had served as vice president and president of the Carbon County Medical Society in the early 1900s. Balliet had a son that was born in 1904 and a sister named Hannah."It would be so nice to return these items to a family member," Deihl said. "I would love to know more about the people who owned them."Anyone interested in viewing the items can contact Deihl at 570-620-5726. In the meantime she will be keeping them safe in the hopes that the items will one day be back in the hands of family."Family history is so important, and maybe there is someone left who knew this person or who is related but never got to know them," Deihl said.
