Scotty's building to become piano center

The old Scotty's building in Little Gap has officially changed hands, with the new owner planning to develop it into a major piano outlet for Carbon County and the surrounding areas.

Last week, H&S Company LTD sold the property at 4335 Little Gap Road to Little Gap Associates in Glen Cove, New York, for $320,000.Richard Smith, president of Little Gap Associates, also owns The Piano Exchange in Glen Cove. Smith has been in the piano business for about 40 years, and has become somewhat of the go-to guy when it comes to the instrument."We sell, buy, repair and supply pianos," Smith said. "We have provided pianos for Broadway shows, TV shows, and more. It's an interesting operation we've had for many years."Smith's description of his business is notably understated, as he has been profiled in The New York Times and Gold Coast Magazine - which designated him "The Other Piano Man" - for his stock of rare instruments and impeccable restoration efforts.Smith has been working on moving stock to the building over the course of the past month, looking forward to a grand opening sometime in the near future. He said that once the operation is up and running, he will make a trip to Little Gap about once a week for the business. Smith had been looking into developing a storage and retail facility somewhere in the region for a while, exploring options from Stroudsburg to Lehighton and beyond."This building is larger, and it seems better for the purpose," Smith said. "We're going to use it as a warehouse, and eventually a retail store. It's a beautiful building in a great location, where people are interested in antiques."

The former Scotty's building, located at 4335 Little Gap Road, was recently purchased by Little Gap Associates, whose owner, Richard Smith, plans to turn it into a piano store and storage center. BRIAN W. MYSZKOWSKI/TIMES NEWS
