'Jack and the Giant'

The Jack and the Beanstalk fable gets a new twist in "Jack and the Giant," opening Thursday at Grace Lutheran Evangelical Church in Lehighton.

The Pale Moon Players, a Lehighton theater company established in 2011, will present the show Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the church located at North Fourth and Mahoning streets. The musical, performed entirely by kids, tells the story of Jack and the Beanstalk with a few new elements, company co-founder Bob Fatzinger says."This one is a little different because there are a few new characters. Jack, the Giant and their backup singers have a lot of singing in this one, and there's a lot of silliness that goes on in this show," Fatzinger says. "In the traditional story the Giant has a chicken or a goose that lays golden eggs and a singing harp. This time we not only have the harp and the chicken, but we also have a cook, a housekeeper and a cook's helper."There are 26 young performers who sing, dance and tell jokes in the full-length production. Company co-founder Laurel Zimmerman says the actors and actresses get a lot out of the experience."The children participating in this show are working on a lot of different social skills and really building their confidence."Families of the actors and actresses have also lent a hand to help get the show off the ground. Fatzinger says parents were very helpful in building sets, painting backdrops, costuming and selling tickets. The Pale Moon Players are also benefiting the Gower family following a recent fire. Fatzinger says a dollar of each ticket sale will go directly to the family."We know the Gower family, and when tragedy strikes in a small town, it's up to everyone in the community to help out. We're part of the community, so we're helping out."Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for children. Those under the age of 3 are free. Doors open at 7 p.m., curtain goes up at 7:30.
