Injured eagle is euthanized

An injured eagle found early Tuesday morning in South Tamaqua had to be euthanized.

The Tamaqua Area Animal Rescue posted on its Facebook page Wednesday night, "She was worse this morning."The bird, which was found on Route 443, near Leiby's, was taken to the Carbon County Environmental Education Center in Summit Hill by the Tamaqua Area Animal Rescue. The center had received a call from West Penn Police and picked up the injured bald eagle near Archery Club Road. The bird was severely underweight.Jeannie Carl from the CCEEC said that the bird "showed some fight" when given fluids and supportive care at the center before being taken to Dr. Kathryn Kropp at Companion Animal Hospital in Tamaqua.Carl said Thursday morning, "We can only assume there was spinal damage. No use of legs and no reaction to gentle pressure to its toes."Carl said the situation is "so very sad."The eagle has to be turned over to the Pennsylvania Game Commission so the CCEEC cannot do a necropsy to be sure of its injuries.
