Man sentenced for drugs in Carbon County prison

A Carbon County man was sentenced on Friday to a state prison term for having drug brought to the county prison.

David E. Furry II, 29, of Jim Thorpe, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve one to two years in a state correctional institution on a charge of contraband into a prison.Furry was arrested on June 16, 2016, after his girlfriend, Tia Green, 23, of Jim Thorpe, brought a pair of sneakers for him at the county jail, where he was an inmate on a probation violation and other pending charges.Corrections officers found methamphetamine hidden in the soles of the sneakers.Furry admitted to a drug addiction problem for the past four years, with heroin as his main drug of choice.Furry told Nanovic, "I wasn't thinking clearly."Nanovic said attempting to bring drugs into the prison is a serious offense, and coupled with Furry's addiction problem, a state prison sentence is warranted. In addition to the prison term, Furry was ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and supply an DNA sample.Furry, who is an inmate serving the probation violation term, will be transferred to the state system.Green was also charged with contraband into a prison. She is scheduled for a pretrial conference in the district attorney's office on Aug. 31 on the charge.
