Freeland man charged in Mahoning crash

A Freeland man has been charged in a June crash on Route 443 near the Carbon Plaza Mall.

On June 15, at 7:34 p.m. police investigated a two-vehicle accident on Route 443 at the Carbon Plaza Mall traffic light.

A westbound Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Gerald Phillips, 54, of Freeland struck a Ford Ranger that was crossing the intersection. Both drivers were transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries. The driver of the Ford was initially taken to Gnaden Huetten Hospital. He was later transferred to Lehigh Valley Hospital for further treatment.

Phillips has been charged with aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence (felony); Driving under the influence of controlled substance (2 counts misdemeanor); Reckless driving (summary); and Traffic control signals (summary).

Gerald was arraigned on July 12,and released on $50,000 unsecured bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 9.
