Lower Towamensing looks at lights, paving

Lower Towamensing Township supervisors made progress last week when they tackled several topics during their monthly meeting. Among the topics were lighting in Stoney Ridge Park, line painting and tree trimming.

Chairman Brent Green approached the board about lighting at Stoney Ridge Park and Recreation Center, as well as paving maintenance of the basketball courts and maintenance of its pavilion and playground in Aquashicola. The lighting would consist of eight 12-foot-tall light poles with a style of light on top, similar to the ones in the park in downtown Palmerton, Green said. Light would be provided by two LED lights. A receptacle would be on the top of the pole for any other needs. The lights would be purchased from Holophane, based in Granville, Ohio, and would cost $14,400. The cost doesn't include running conduits and electrical wiring.Supervisor Ron Walbert said he thinks the cost is too high and lighting on the recreation center would be sufficient to illuminate the parking lot and path to the bathrooms."I think it would behoove us to put some lighting on the building," he said.Green said the building is not that tall in the front and lighting would end up being almost at eye level."You're not going to get a better price," he said."After we have a grand total, then we can budget for this," Walbert said. The board discussed cleaning and sealing the basketball courts and playground in Aquashicola, and maintenance to the pavilion.Pavement Maintenance Contractors Inc. in Bath said it could do the courts and playground for $13,950 and the surfaces wouldn't need to be redone again for eight years.Tom Berger Jr., Driveway Repair in Palmerton, said it could do the cleaning and crack sealing of the basketball court for $2,975 and pavilion maintenance for another $450."We can crack and seal ourselves," Walbert said. The board decided to table the sealant and maintenance work, because of the expense. But they did vote on the Holophane lighting proposal. Green and Mendez voted yes, and Walbert voted no.Next was line painting and tree trimming.Green said there are some roads that have only one coating of paint on the lines and need a second, and others that need to be redone. Roads that are too narrow or are slated to have work done on them were not considered for line painting, he said.Walbert asked how long ago the work was done on those that need it redone, and Green said it was a few years ago."If they don't last more than two years, then don't give them the business," Walbert said about the company that did the painting.Green said he thinks the work was done by Guidemark in Souderton and it was done well. He said it's better than work done before them."Over by Bowmanstown, they used a buggy, and it looks like an anaconda," Green said.As far as tree trimming, Green said Lang's Landscaping Inc. in Palmerton charges $1,500 per day to cut, chip and haul away the clippings. He said there are trees on Hemlock Street, and Club, Spruce, Oak and Boyer Farm roads that could use trimming.Walbert said he supports clearing out any dead trees, but not trimming in order to open up sunlight on the road. The board decided to ask the road foreman to determine which roads have trees that need trimmed and lines that need repainted.
