Lower Towamensing Township plans recycling events

Recycling was on the minds of the Lower Towamensing Township supervisors Tuesday night.

Chairman Brent Green suggested to the board that the township host another electronic recycling event. It gives people a place to get rid of old televisions and computers and it was successful last year."I guess it wouldn't hurt," said Supervisor Ron Walbert.Green said Responsible Recycling Services in Kutztown charges $675 for three hours for a weekend event, $100 for every hour after that and $75 to provide traffic control. They offer weekday events, but Walbert said he thinks a weekend would be more convenient for people. The supervisors voted to hold another electronics recycling event and have the company provide traffic control. Green said he would call and reserve the first weekend the company has available.Supervisor Jesse Mendez reported that the metal recycling event on Sunday was successful."It went great," he said. "It gets better every time."This was the second event this year. The first one was in June and a third is scheduled for Oct. 15.Mendez explained that Hernandez Scrap Metal in the Lehigh Valley used a pickup with rails on the sides and collected enough metal to fill four truckloads. They don't take televisions or computers, but they do accept stoves, refrigerators, washers and dryers, air conditioners, humidifiers and any other unwanted scrap metal. Plus, if someone can't bring the item to the municipal building, then the company will pick it up at the residence."It doesn't cost the township or the residents anything," Mendez said. Disposal is free.If anyone has questions about the metal recycling, they should call 610-730-1089 for more information.
