Standoff ends with 1 in custody

A Lehighton man was taken into custody without incident after about a one-hour standoff with police and sheriff's deputies in the borough Monday afternoon.

Jarred West, 26, was taken into custody by the Carbon County Sheriff's Department following the standoff outside 351½ N. Second St. No injuries were reported.According to Carbon County Sheriff Tony Harvilla, sheriff's deputies were attempting to serve a warrant at the home when they were alerted to a potential firearm.Eventually, West was taken into custody without incident.He is being held on a warrant for a failure to appear, Harvilla said.Outside, neighbors watched from their porches as the situation unfolded.Ryan Briesemeister, who along with his girlfriend were inside the upstairs unit of the home, escaped without incident.Briesemeister, 21, said West had a gun and was waving it around outside to show it off.While inside the home, Briesemeister said he looked on as officers converged on the home."I was shocked," Briesemeister said. "I watched out the upstairs window and called my friend."Briesemeister added, "It was pathetic and disturbing to see a bunch of cops outside my house."The block was shut down between Ochre and Coal streets due to police activity.Police officers from Lehighton, Mahoning Township, Franklin Township and Pennsylvania State Police responded.Chris Reber contributed to this report
