Rockin' Rescue draws pets, owners to Lehighton grove

The Rockin' Rescue in Lehighton brought in dogs, cats, reptiles, ponies and all their owners on Saturday to benefit local animal organizations.

Held in the Lehighton Grove, the rescue offered food, pony rides, animal exhibits, raffles, yard and craft sales and music. Proceeds raised by the event went toward the Carbon County Friends of Animals Animal Cruelty Fund and the Animal Shelter of Carbon. The main event of the day was still the animals.Organized to benefit animal welfare, part of the day was to showcase animals who were up for adoption, such as Milo and Watson, kittens who were with the Carbon County Friends of Animals in Jim Thorpe.Milo and Watson were found in Jim Thorpe.Born to a feral mother, they were rescued by a woman who had those two and other kittens spayed and neutered. The kittens were then brought to the organization that takes care of them.Dana Dunbar from Carbon County Friends of Animals says now is a good time to adopt as local shelters are overcrowded."Everybody wants a kitten, and right now the shelters are overpacked with kittens and mothers, so now is a great time to adopt."The event not only gave organizations an opportunity to promote adoptions and give information, it also gave groups the chance to show off exotic animals like snakes, alligators, lizards and rare tortoises.Christina's Reptile and Animal Sanctuary was a popular spot for the guests where they could interact with Pokey the sulcata tortoise, alligators Apollo and Caesar, Gub Gub the water monitor, and snakes Killjoy, Cheesecake, Ratatouille and Cayenne.Children also got the chance to take a pony ride in the grove. Step Back in Time Equine from Effort brought in Bella the pony, who gave rides to children beginning at the start of the event.A car show was also held during the rescue. Antique and new cars lined up for display on Iron Street across from the food court for visitors to view.Guests also got the chance to enjoy food from the Beltzville Lions, Lehighton Lionesses and the Parryville Fire Company, as well as other local businesses that sold funnel cakes, barbecue, hot dogs and other fair foods.Music was provided throughout the day as well by local bands, including the Bedlam Blues Band, The Bees Knees, Ivory Blu, The Senile Delinquents, and Bugsy's Evolution. For more information on adopting an animal from the Carbon County Friends of Animals, visit
