A Tamaqua man learned it doesn't pay to lie to police.
An officer on patrol at 1 a.m. on July 1 was entering the Turkey Hill Minit Mart when he noticed an expired inspection sticker on a car just pulling into the lot. As the female passenger went into the store the officer attempted to tell the driver about the expired sticker. The man initially ignored him but then rolled down the window and said the vehicle was owned by his friend who just went in the store.Due to the man's attitude, the officer asked to see his driver's license. He replied that he had a New Jersey license and didn't have it with him.He was asked for his name and date of birth, which he said was Robert Presser. There were no records found for that name and the birth date he provided. In the meantime, another officer spoke with the female friend, who said the man's name was Maddox. When asked again the man "admitted" being Matthew Maddox, spelling out the name, and gave a different date of birth. There were no records found. The woman then told the other officer her friend's first name was Michael, not Matthew. There were no records found, in Pennsylvania or New Jersey, for a Michael Maddox. There were records found for a Michael Mattox, 25, including warrants for his arrest.Mattox was positively identified by his grandmother after officers learned she lived in town.He was taken to the Schuylkill County prison in Pottsville on the warrants.Tamaqua police will file additional charges of providing false identification to police.
