Slatington man gets prison term for multiple drug counts

A Slatington man was sentenced to a prison term on Thursday after pleading guilty to drug charges.

Chad Harrison Hartsell, 35, entered pleas in four pending cases before Judge Steven R. Serfass to two counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count each of possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while under suspension-DUI related.He was arrested on the drug counts on May 9, and Nov. 2 and 23, 2016. The suspension count occurred on Oct. 11, 2016, along South Fourth Street by Lehighton police. The drug charges were filed by state police at Lehighton, Lehighton and Mahoning Township police. In the drug cases, heroin was the drug involved.Hartsell admitted to a drug addiction problem and said the criminal counts were all tied to his addiction.Serfass sentenced him to serve six to 12 months on each drug count and 45 to 90 days on the suspension charge with the terms running concurrently. He was also fined $500 on the suspension charge.Serfass also ordered Hartsell to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, render a total of 150 hours of community service when paroled, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.Hartsell is currently serving a probation violation term which runs to Jan. 20, 2018. Serfass ruled his sentences would run concurrent with that term.Hartsell was granted immediate work-release privileges.
