One in custody after standoff in Lehighton

A man was taken into custody without incident after about a one-hour standoff with police and sheriff's deputies in Lehighton Monday afternoon.

The suspect was taken into custody by the Carbon County Sheriff's Department following the standoff outside 351 1/2 N. Second Street.

No injuries were reported.

According to Carbon County Sheriff Tony Harvilla, Sheriff's deputies were attempting to serve a warrant at the home when they were alerted to a potential firearm. Eventually the suspect was taken into custody without incident. He is being held on a warrant for a failure to appear, Harvilla said. No further details were available.

A man and his girlfriend who were atop the home at 351 N. Second Street escaped without incident. Outside, neighbors could be seen watching from their porches.

The block was shut down between Ochre and Coal streets due to police activity.

Officers from Lehighton Police Department, Mahoning Police Department, Franklin Township Police Department and Pennsylvania State Police responded.
