Towamensing awards bid for fuel, tables others

Towamensing's board of supervisors approved one bid for materials at Thursday's meeting, though bids for stone and anti-skid materials have been put off for further evaluation.

Secretary Brenda Drew presented bids from Papco, Locust Ridge Quarry, and Lehigh Asphalt, covering stone, anti-skid, and liquid fuel materials. The board accepted a single bid for low sulfur diesel fuel at $1.8404 per gallon for 15,000 gallons, and heating fuel at $1.7761 per gallon for 2,000 gallons, totaling $31,670.35. The bid prices included delivery, and were based on rates calculated for June 30.The board decided to table the decision on bids for milling, stone, and anti-skid materials in order to further evaluate the offers.Fire company newsTowamensing Volunteer Fire Company President Eric George announced that the department's website,

Currently, the site features a list of upcoming events, but more content will be added soon.A recent inspection of the fire company's kitchen by the Department of Agriculture found the facility to be in perfect order, with no violations.George announced the Firehouse Block Party, which will take place from 4 to 11 p.m. on July 29.The all-you-can-eat buffet will go on from 4 until 8 p.m., and feature sausage, peppers, and onions, chicken Marsala, pulled pork, meatloaf, baked ziti, chicken Parmesan, filling, salads, and more, all provided by Beltzville Bar and Grill.Draft beer and wine coolers will be available for sale from 4 until 11 p.m., with the first drink on the house. Door prizes, including a 48-inch flat-screen TV, will be up for grabs, and there will be games of chance. D.J. Dave will provide entertainment from 4 to 7 p.m., with Band of Brothers doling out classic rock from 8 until 11 p.m.Tickets can be purchased at the fire company on Monday evenings. The event is rain or shine, and no outside beverages are allowed.George also announced that the fire company will begin holding monthly breakfasts on the second Sunday of each month, starting on Sept. 10.
