This coming Wednesday evening the Eldred Township board of supervisors will be considering adopting ordinance 2017-01 which will reduce the speed limit on Meixsell Valley Road in the township to 40 mph.
Meixsell Valley Road runs from Old Route 115 in Ross Township to Fiddletown Road in Eldred Township. The section of the road in Eldred Township is currently posted at 55 mph. The section in Ross Township is posted at 40 mph."I never realized it was 55 mph," said Eldred Supervisor Gary Hoffman. "That seems awfully fast for a back country road. I think that it's better to be consistent."Last year a number of residents had made inquiries at township meetings about the possibility of lowering the speed limit on the road to match Ross Township."We don't live on Meixsell Valley Road, but we do own property on it," Robert Boileau said. "People do go pretty fast along that road."Both Hoffman and Boileau said they weren't aware of anyone who wasn't supporting the change."I don't think there is anyone who doesn't think it's a good idea," Boileau said.Lifelong township resident Vernon Barlieb is concerned that the change may be pointless."It's hard to argue with safety," Barlieb said. "I just wonder who is going to enforce it."Meixsell Valley Road is patrolled by the Pennsylvania State Police Lehighton barracks.
