Lehighton woman severely injured in explosion at fireworks plant

A 38-year-old Lehighton woman was rushed to the hospital after being injured at Celebrations Fireworks this morning.

Slatington Fire Chief Jason Nicholas said the woman was severely injured in an explosion at the plant on Seventh Street at 7:22 a.m.The woman, whose name was not released, was taken by ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest. Her condition is not known.Nicholas said he doesn’t know what caused the explosion at this point.The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is on scene and the Allentown Bomb Squad. Officials plan to detonate any questionable fireworks. The road was expected to be closed for an hour while this was taking place.A small fire erupted from the explosion, but Nicholas said it was extinguished within minutes. Assisting at the scene were Emerald, Slatedale and Neffs fire company.Celebration Fireworks owner John Kemps told The (Allentown) Morning Call an electric match might have malfunctioned, causing the blast. The devices are attached to each firework shell and are used to ignite them.Fifteen employees work at the facility in Slatington.According to the company’s website, Celebration Fireworks is the premier regional fireworks display company in eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.“We excel at the art of the pyromusical, where fireworks are tightly synchronized to a musical score customized for your event. Our traditional displays are designed with exciting choreography and computer-controlled as well,” the website said.The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is on scene.The company has coordinated fireworks for area displays, including Jim Thorpe and Lehighton.Check back for updates.
