Man waives in hearing in crash that killed 2 Thorpe students

A man facing vehicular homicide charges for a 2015 crash in Penn Forest Township was in court on Wednesday.

About a dozen supporters were on hand as Teagan Kane waived his right to a preliminary hearing on charges stemming from the crash. He is facing two felony counts of homicide by vehicle and related charges in connection with the Aug. 20, 2015, crash which killed two Jim Thorpe Area High School students.Kane, then 18, was behind the wheel of a minivan traveling north on Route 903 near Weiler Road, when he lost control and crossed the center line, causing the vehicle to roll and hit an oncoming SUV.Kane and his five passengers were all injured in the crash. Jasmine Fonseca, 15, and Taylor Shepherdson, 16, both of Albrightsville died from their injuries. The girls were members of the Jim Thorpe Area High School cheerleading squad. Two people in the vehicle they struck were also injured, according to police. After waiving Wednesday’s hearing, Kane will now have to decide whether to face trial on the charges or work out a deal with prosecutors that may help him avoid a state prison term.“Everyone recognizes this is a very unfortunate accident, and right now nobody is looking to ruin this young man’s life, but at the same time there is a degree of accountability there. He has to be accountable,” Assistant District Attorney Brian Gazo said.Kane’s attorney, Brett Riegel, said he needs to review the evidence in the case before he can determine whether the case will end with a trial or a plea agreement. While Kane’s supporters declined to speak with the media, Riegel said that was wonderful to see the support for Kane, who he called a good kid. He said that he has a daily reminder of the toll the crash took in his brother, Korben, who was severely injured.“Both those who were involved in this and lost family members and friends, and others were here in support of Teagan, and want to see him come out of this with as little damage to his life as possible,” Riegel said.
