Update: 2 dead in apparent murder-suicide after barricade had local ties

CENTER VALLEY (AP) — Authorities have released the names of a couple found dead in an apparent murder-suicide after barricading themselves in a home following a traffic stop during which police were fired upon.

The Lehigh County coroner’s office said 33-year-old Eric Messick of Walnutport and 25-year-old Emily Fatzinger of Greene Township in Pike County, formerly of Palmerton, were pronounced dead Saturday night at 4146 Lanark Road, Upper Saucon Township. Autopsies are planned Monday.District Attorney Jim Martin said in a news conference Saturday night that their deaths were the result of an “apparent murder-suicide.” He said “One suspect shot the other, then killed himself.”Police said the man fired at officers just before noon Saturday after police tried to pull them over on a parole violation. The couple then barricaded themselves in the home Saturday afternoon and, after police deployed tear gas into the house, the bodies were found in the attic, ending the hourslong standoff.Wanted in MonroeAccording to published reports, Messick was wanted by Pocono Mountain Regional Police in Monroe County after stealing a vehicle during a traffic stop.According to police, Messick was the passenger in a vehicle that was stopped at 1 a.m. April 16 on Route 309 in northern Monroe County. Police stopped the vehicle because the driver did not dim its high beams.After the driver was removed from the vehicle on suspicion of DUI, Messick reportedly slid over to the driver’s seat, and stole the vehicle.The vehicle was later found abandoned.Two witnesses identified the driver as Messick, even though he had given a false name during the traffic stop.The woman who had been driving the vehicle before the initial stop, identified as Fatzinger, was charged with driving under the influence of drugs.Messick was wanted on felony charges of theft, fleeing and eluding, as well as various misdemeanor charges.The deaths are being investigated by Upper Saucon Township Police Department with the assistance of the Pennsylvania State Police and the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office.— Times News staff contributed to this report.
