All-out search called for killer

The Pennsylvania Attorney General is conducting an all-out search for Michael Marchalk, who is charged with the death of his father, a Barnesville lawyer, with a baseball bat.

Attorney General Josh Shapiro and the Pennsylvania State Police are seeking the public's help in finding Marchalk, 37, charged with the killing of Gary Marchalk, 60, in his Schuylkill County home.Gary was found bludgeoned to death in his home Monday. He was pronounced dead at 12:04 p.m. by Deputy Coroner David Truskowsky.Michael, also of Barnesville, fled in his father's car. Michael failed to show up Monday at a drug-treatment program as planned.State police at Frackville have charged Michael with criminal homicide, murder of the first degree, murder of the second degree, murder of the third degree, voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, robbery, theft, theft of a motor vehicle, access device fraud, and recklessly endangering another person.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by trooper Joseph W. Hall with District Judge Christina E. Hale of Frackville:Gary's younger son, Matthew D. Marchalk, 33, called Schuylkill County 911 at 11:47 a.m. Monday, saying his father appeared to be dead.State police rushed to the house at 21 Pear St., where they found Marchalk's battered body in an upstairs bedroom, lying facedown, the walls, ceiling, and door spattered with blood, and the bloody bat at his feet.His wallet, as well as his gold 2015 Ford Fusion, were gone.Matthew Marchalk told police that his brother has a drug problem and had been using recently. He said Michael Marchalk had been making threats to kill Gary and the family.Gary Marchalk was a legal administrator for the Law Firm of Cerullo, Datte and Wallbillich, PC in Pottsville while attending Widener School of Law in Harrisburg, where he completed in 2005 his law degree cum laude and, subsequently, passed the Pennsylvania State Bar Exam that same year.He also held positions as corporate accounting manager, consumer and commercial loan officer, as well as other positions in the finance, insurance, coal and textile industries. In 2005, he opened his own firm, the law offices of Gary D. Marchalk, in Tamaqua, while simultaneously operating the title firm of Northeast Pennsylvania Abstract, now Northeast Edge Associates.He was also very involved in local and county Republican politics over the years.State police at Frackville were assisted by the state police Troop L. Major Case Team and the Forensic Service Unit in their investigation.County District Attorney Christine Holman, who also lives in Barnesville and was friends with the couple, referred the case to Shapiro's office.The Office of Attorney General prosecutors approved murder and theft charges against Michael Marchalk on Tuesday.Investigators say Michael Marchalk was last seen at a Philadelphia bus terminal, though authorities are unsure if he boarded a bus.Anyone with information is asked to call the Pennsylvania State Police at 570-874-5300 if they see Michael Marchalk or have any information that could lead to his arrest.For Gary Marchalk's complete obituary, see Page 4.
