Two people were cited by Tamaqua police after they tried to scam another man out of more than $1,000.

Samantha Boylan, 19, and Jacob R. Hartzell, 21, both of S. Lehigh Street, Tamaqua, and their intended victim, went to the M & T Bank branch office at 100 E. Broad St., on June 5.Boylan wrote out a check for $2,150 to the victim with the understanding he would give them back $1,050 immediately. He could keep the rest as partial payment for a loan he made to the couple on an earlier date.The victim cashed the check and turned over the requested money.As Boylan and Hartzell left the bank with the cash the teller discovered there was not enough money in their account to cover the check and called police.Officers were able to stop the couple before they went very far and returned the cash to the bank.Both were cited for theft by deception.
