Carbon County court guilty pleas
A Carbon County woman admitted lying for her son in entering a guilty plea in the county court on Tuesday to a charge of false reports to law enforcement.
She was one of five defendants in pending criminal cases to enter a guilty plea before Judge Joseph J. Matika.Lying to policeKristina M. Houser, 41, admitted lying to police following an incident on Feb. 12. Borough police responded to a report of an accident in the area of 199 Stock St. The people in the vehicle fled the scene. The car was then reported stolen, which was false. Houser said she reported the car stolen to "cover" for her son, Shane Houser.Matika told her, "Lying for your son is not a good example as a parent."Matika placed her on probation for 6 months and ordered she render 25 hours of community service.False namesJennifer Rose Stefanick, 23, of Summit Hill, pleaded to one count of false reports to law enforcement.She was arrested on Feb. 21 by Kidder Township police at the Madison Inn along Route 534 in Albrightsville. Police responded to the area for a report of suspicious individuals. Stefanick was found at the scene but gave a false name to the officers. They later determined who she really was.She told Matika she lied because she knew there was a warrant out for her arrest filed by the probation office.Stefanick is currently serving a 6 to 12 months prison term on other charges.Matika placed her on probation for a year, concurrent with the sentencing she is serving, and ordered her to render 50 hours of community service when paroled, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use.Jay Michael Abelovsky, 29, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of false identification.He was arrested on Jan. 17 along Lizard Creek Road in East Penn Township by state police at Lehighton. During a traffic stop Abelovsky, who was a passenger in the vehicle, gave a false name. He said he did it because he knew there was a warrant out for his arrest.Abelovsky is currently an inmate in the county prison serving a probation/parole violation. His minimum runs to Oct. 24.Matika placed him on probation for 6 months, consecutive with his current sentence, and ordered he get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use and render 25 hours of community service when he is paroled.Retail theftsCharles Martin Haupt III, 39, of Jim Thorpe, pleaded to one count of retail theft.He was arrested by Nesquehoning police on June 4, 2016, for an incident at Redner's Warehouse Market where he took $11.32 worth of merchandise.Matika deferred sentencing and ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report.Chad Michael Hartranft, 41, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of retail theft.He was arrested by Mahoning Township police for an incident at the Walmart store on Dec. 17, 2016, where he and a co-defendant were involved in the theft of a 44-inch television valued at $468.74.Matika placed him on probation for a year and ordered he render 50 hours of community service and stay out of the Walmart store.Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
