Pleasant Valley director-elect pushes for action

Pleasant Valley School District director Steve Borger has missed more than a few board meetings. And township resident and school board director elect Laura Jecker thinks it is about time that the sitting board does something about it.

"I had brought this up in January and again at the last meeting, and I know that others have brought it up as well," Jecker said.He has attended few meetings since his re-election in November 2015, she said.Jecker was not reassured by the reaction of the board when she brought the subject up again at the last meeting."I would just like to see them do the same thing they did when Mr. Hoffman died," Jecker said. "Post the position and fill it within 30 days."Jecker said she is tired of the "back burner" and "wait and see" attitude of the current board.Jecker has started a petition on iPetitions titled "Petition to Replace Pleasant Valley School Board Director."The petition starts off by stating that Borger has only attended three out of 31 meetings.PA General Assembly Statute on meetings states, "If a board member shall neglect or refuse to attend two successive regular meetings of the board, unless detained by sickness or prevented by necessary absence from the district, or if in attendance at any meeting s/he shall neglect or refuse to act in his/her official capacity as a school director, the remaining members of the board may declare such office vacant on the affirmative vote of a majority of the remaining members of the board.Borger had responded to previous questions about his missing meetings. When contacted in April, Borger said that he had a schedule change in his job at the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission which required him to work a 3 to 11 p.m. shift."Your livelihood and that of your family has to come first," Borger said in a phone interview. "I did not run for the school board to not fulfill my obligations, and whenever my schedule permits I will attend the meetings. In the meantime, I keep in touch with the other directors."Jecker added that she is not picking on Borger, but that she believes that the board needs nine dedicated directors who are fully engaged in what is going on in the district."I do respect his work ethic and I understand that he did not have this work shift when he was elected," Jecker said. "It is not meant to be personal. I just don't think this board is going to do anything about it."Jecker isn't the only director-elect to comment on her petition. Donna Yozwiak, who will also join the board after the upcoming general election, left a comment as well."We need nine active school board members to make important decisions for the Pleasant Valley taxpayers and the students," Yozwiak wrote. "Not only eight."Borger did not respond to emails as of the time of publication.
