Tamaqua man arrested on assault charges

A Tamaqua man was placed in the Schuylkill County prison in Pottsville onTuesday after a domestic dispute.

Police went to 401 Pine St. at 10:22 a.m. after someone called to report that people in the home were yelling. Officers were directed to an apartment housing Jesse Connell, 37, and his girlfriend. No one answered, despite repeated knocks on the door.As the officer was speaking with neighbors a woman suddenly shouted, "Help me, help me." The officer entered the home and was met by Connell, who said he was bitten by his girlfriend. The girlfriend began screaming, "He was choking me."When asked why no one came to the door when officers knocked, the woman said she was unable to respond as Connell had her pinned down, with his hands around her neck. When she began to lose consciousness she bit him and was finally able to yell for help. There were visible marks on her arms and neck.Connell had a bite mark on the top of his one hand.He was arraigned before District Judge Stephen Bayer, Tamaqua, on charges of simple assault, unlawful restraint, strangulation and harassment. Bail was set at $5,000 percentage, which the defendant was unable to post.
