Monroe man charged in Effort armed robbery

A Monroe County man has been charged with the armed robbery of a Dollar General Monday night in Effort.

Brian Flugel, 30, faces charges of robbery, theft by unlawful taking or disposition, receiving stolen property, and possession of weapon.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Trooper Leo Nita of the Pennsylvania State Police Fern Ridge barracks:At 10:03 p.m. Monday, Nita was dispatched to the Dollar General for the report of an armed robbery.Nita interviewed two employees who told them that a 20-30-year-old white man wearing a face mask, baseball hat, black hoodie, black pants and red gloves entered the store carrying a black handgun.The man approached the front counter and instructed one of the employees to give him the money from the register.The employee then opened the register and handed him the cash, and the man then fled the scene as the employee locked the door behind him.The employee was able to identify the man as Flugel, who is a frequent customer.The other employee said that he observed Flugel enter the store with a handgun, and the employee called 911.At 1:52 p.m. Tuesday, Fern Ridge State Police was contacted by a man who said he was in contact with Flugel, and that arrangements were made for Flugel to turn himself in.At 2:40 a.m. Flugel was interviewed at the UNI-mart parking area and he confessed to robbing the Dollar General with a BB pistol.Flugel was given $207 or $217, which he used to buy heroin.He was taken to Fern Ridge state police barracks.The BB gun was recovered from the mailbox of a vacant residence on Lindsay Lane at Allan Drive.The victim seeks restitution in the amount of $459.Flugel is currently lodged in Monroe County Prison under $100,000 bail.He is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing at 10 a.m. June 23 before District Judge Colleen Mancuso of Brodheadsville.
