District revising dress code

Panther Valley School District is planning to make updates to its dress code.

Parents were recently advised to hold off buying new school clothes until the policy gets a vote on June 22, according to a letter sent home last week. The school board plans to vote on a new policy at their meeting June 22.Superintendent Dennis Kergick said that while violations of the dress code are uncommon, the new policy should please parents.“Quite simply, the kids look great in the appropriate dress for school. Overall, dress code violations are minimal and in most cases minor,” he said.At least two students have addressed the school board over their concerns about the dress code over the past two years. The policy would be enforced for all returning students starting on the first day of school. New students will receive a one-week grace period. The most noticeable change for students would be that they are no longer limited to the black, yellow, gray and khaki clothing of the old policy.Shorts are allowed in grades K-6, but not at the high school. Shorts and skorts must be fingertip length. Capri pants are permitted.Pants/shorts must be sized to fit the student (not too tight or too baggy)Pants and skirts need to be worn at the waistline, which is defined as the top of the hip to the bottom of the rib cage. The modification to the colors deals primarily with being realistic about expectations, availability and cognizant of the needs and concerns expressed by both parents and students,” Kergick said.Students would also be permitted to wear any closed-toe, closed-heeled shoe. Previously, they too were limited in color.Gauge earrings are now banned. The district also plans to relax a policy that said skirts and dresses had to be knee length. The new regulation would be they have to reach the student’s fingertips.Shirts allowed include golf shirts, button-down oxford shirts, crew neck sweatshirts and long-sleeve shirts.
